Jeonghyeon Joo captures sounds by scraping and slicing banana boxes with a bowโrecorded without electric processing or effectsโtransforming everyday materials into sound objects through a 4-channel fixed audio work. The bow used for slicing is haegeumโs bow (a two-stringed traditional instrument) and the raw recorded sounds are played back through speakers located in four different boxes. The artist describes this process as the sense of โbeing sliced,โ treating the banana box as both an instrument and a living entity. The 4 minutes and 20 seconds runtime connects to the cultural metaphor of 420, presenting multi-layered contexts: the various transportation and distribution systems mediated by banana boxes, and the boundaries between illegality and legality. This work functions as spatial sculpture resonating throughout the exhibition space: this sound transforms the space into something like a jungle or a construction site, drawing different interpretations according to individual viewer.
